The article is devoted to the history of the long-term struggle for the Shamkhal throne between the Tarki Shamkhal Adil-Girey and the Kazanishch landowner Umalat-shamkhal in the first quarter of the XVIII century. Russia played the significant role in the described events. Having given the support to Adil-Girey, Russia strengthened her positions in Daghestan on the eve of the Persian campaign of 1722.
