The article covers the historical experience of engaging women in scientific activities in the early Soviet period taking into account modern views on the assessment of the gender potential of Russian science on the example of a multinational region with a strong influence of local traditions and norms of Islam. Using the principles of historicism and objectivity, comparative historical, bibliographic, descriptive methods and cause-and-effect analysis based on documentary data and research achievements involved in the scientific circulation, the ways of promoting women of Daghestan in science are considered, changes in gender stereotypes in this area are shown in the conditions of Soviet modernization.
