TRADITIONS OF CHOOSING A NAME FOR A NEWBORN AMONG THE PEOPLES OF DAGHESTAN

The article is about the Daghestan traditions related to the choice of a name for a child. The features of naming among the peoples of Daghestan, the ways of choosing a name, the people's ideas about names, their influence on the fate and character of the child, the canonical rituals prescribed by Islam are described. The main factors determining the choice of a particular name are considered. Attention is drawn to the symbolism and significance of the naming ceremony in the everyday culture of the peoples of Daghestan. The author comes to the conclusion that the main motives for choosing a name include providing magical protection to the bearer of the name, predicting the fate of a person, observing family prohibitions and ensuring socio-cultural adaptation of a person. People have always attached importance to names. The process of choosing a name for a newborn was taken seriously. The name was respected, revered, treated as a part of oneself. Traditionally, the name in the minds of people was endowed with a special sacred meaning, it could bring good luck and happiness to a person, determine his fate and traits.
