The article considers one of the important and conservative rites of the life cycle - the funeral and memorial rite of the modern Ingush people. It is known that the formation of these rituals was particularly influenced by the norms of the Muslim religion which reflected some elements of the pre-Muslim period. The purpose of this study is to show what kind of transformations took place in the Ingush society under the influence of not only Islam but also the previous period of history. The Ingush people have passed through three stages in their development - the pagan, the Christian and the Muslim. But with the spread and establishment of Islam, the old religious rites gradually began to be ousted from the society life. They were replaced by the Sufi practices which eventually took root and continue to exist, despite resistance of the local Salafists who have appeared in the society in recent decades. For an objective and comprehensive consideration of the stated topic, in 2021-2023, literary sources on this problem were studied and field materials were collected and analyzed in various districts of Ingushetia and in the Suburban region of North Ossetia - Alania in places of compact Ingush residence. In the course of the study the methods of analysis and synthesis were used supplemented by the descriptive method that allowed to record the ritual, characteristic of the funeral and memorial practices of the Ingushes. The analysis of the collected material also allows to conclude that lots of rituals in the course of historical development have lost their former significance and gone out of use, transformed and changed, others were born under influence of the Salafi trends in Islam causing confrontation in the local society.
