PHYTONYMS OF THE AVAR LANGUAGE: FROM THE EXPERIENCE OF COLLECTING AND LEXICOGRAPHY

The name of the plant (phytonym) is a special group of vocabulary. These are words of different origins, with different stylistic shades, differing in their speech function, but united by symbols. Traditionally, they are described in explanatory dictionaries as a subset of a certain vocabulary, the description of which emphasizes the scientific and encyclopedic components. This method acquires some names outside the thematic group (outdated, regional, ambiguous, etc.), ignoring the repetition of really existing stylistic stratification. Moreover, the words of this group are not enough to replenish dictionaries with new corresponding units. The presence of non-essential units in the dictionary, common usage, including the absence of new ones, as well as the lack of consistency in their interpretation lead to the accumulation of unorganized or codified units in use. Any designation of a plant has a reason or reasons, which are considered to be the reason for assigning a name to a plant. These may be features of the structure of the plant or its parts. All this is taken into account and studied by botanists. It should be noted here that the modern idea of plant facts does not always coincide with the idea of the time of the appearance of phytonymic names. The linguistic approach to the study of phytonyms aims at the examining the plant nomination (onomasiological aspect) and its semantics (semasiological aspect).
