The article is devoted to the analysis of battle painting by Russian artists of the 19th century, in particular G.G. Gagarin, M.Yu. Lermontov, F.A. Rubo, from the standpoint of historical realism. The purpose of the study is to assess the degree of reliability of some plots of battle art by these authors using documentary sources. In the 19th century, Russian artists, following poets, writers and travelers, set off for the Caucasus to explore it and open it up to Russian society. Russian-Caucasian relations during this period of historical development experienced serious dramatic events associated with the Caucasian War, as an attempt to forcibly integrate the region into the Russian Empire. At the same time, the battle art of a whole galaxy of Russian artists who realistically reflected harsh military scenes in their paintings was a step towards bringing two different cultures closer together. And in this we see the enduring relevance of the research topic. The methodological basis for the disclosure of the topic was the principle of historicism, objectivity, traditional for such research, as well as a systematic approach that takes into account the interdisciplinary nature of the study, at the intersection of history, art history and cultural studies. The involvement of documentary material in the study allowed us to conclude that the battle painting of G.G. Gagarin, M.Yu. Lermontov and F.A. Rubo, with all their individuality, is reliable and can serve as a source for the history of the Caucasian War, reflecting the spirit of the era.
