The article is devoted to the characterization of the field historical and ethnographical materials - an entire complex of documents and objects of material culture directly reflecting the historical process, capturing individual facts and events as one of the most important sources in the study of the history of the peoples of Daghestan. The need to evaluate and analyze such materials is justified by the fact that modern processes such as globalization and permanent urbanization contribute to the loss of historical and ethnographical materials that have not yet been identified and, as a rule, are concentrated in rural areas. It is proposed to resume organizing expeditions to collect "remnants of antiquity" while they are still available to researchers. Attention is focused on the importance of field expedition material in the study of certain issues of the medieval period of Daghestan's history, on which there are few or no written sources. It is noted that among Daghestani scientists, Professor R.M. Magomedov, who, as the patriarch of the historical science of Daghestan, did considerable work on collecting and publishing historical and ethnographical materials, was the first to begin collecting and paying attention to historical and ethnographical materials as a source for reconstructing individual historical events and processes. Starting from the 1960s and up to the early 1990s of the 20th century, the Institute of History, Language and Literature of the Daghestan Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences (now the Institute of History, Archaeology and Ethnography of the Daghestan Federal Research Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences) annually conducted historical and ethnographical expeditions, which consisted of researchers from the sectors (departments) of Daghestan history, Oriental studies, and Ethnography. Collected were considerable materials that made it possible to understand many issues of socio-economic and political history, economic and social activities, and to gain understanding of the way of life, material and spiritual culture of the peoples of Daghestan. The material collected by the historians is stored in the Scientific Archive of the Institute of History, Archaeology and Ethnography of the Daghestan Federal Research Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences and is used by both the Institute staff and anyone who is interested in the history and ethnography of the region.
