MAGOMED G. NURMAGOMEDOV AND HIS BIO-BIBLIOGRAPHICREFERENCE BOOK "TABAQAT AL-A'YAN FI WAFAYAT BA'DA ASLAF DAGHISTAN": HISTORY OF CREATION AND GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS
Until the XX century Arabic had been used for official and business correspondence in Daghestan, and Daghestanis had academically been more oriented towards the Arab East. Dagehstani alims were familiar with Eastern authors' works, often copying, commenting on, and creating original works based on them. Some have been studied and introduced into scientific discourse, while others are still being identified. One such original work is Magomed Gadzhievich Nurmagomedov's bio-bibliographical reference book "Tabaqat al-a'yan fi wafayat ba'da аslaf Daghistan" ("Categories of Famous People [by dates] of Death of Some Ancestors of Daghestanis"), which has not been translated into Russian or introduced into scientific discourse yet. The author collected and systematized the material during the years 1930-1990. The work is written in literary Arabic and contains biographical information about over a hundred Daghestani alims, from the XI to the first half of the XX centuries. An exceptional feature of M.G. Nurmagomedov's work is that it was written during the Soviet period, when the communist ideology was dominant and the Arabic language was completely banned. Furthermore, the article presents previously unknown facts from the life and creative heritage of the compiler himself, discovered during work in his personal archive. The study provides the author's recollections of the idea of collecting and systematizing material for the reference book, its archaeographic description, and a brief summary. Information about the bio-bibliographical collection is being introduced into scientific discourse for the first time.
