SEMANTIC MODIFICATIONS OF ARABIC LOANWAYS IN THE AVAR LANGUAGE
The article is devoted to the analysis of semantic modifications occurring in the process of mastering the borrowed Arabic vocabulary by the Avar language. Daghestani linguists paid special attention to phonetic and morphological adaptation in the study of borrowing issues. The issues of lexical and semantic adaptation of Arabic loanwords in Daghestan languages remained unexplored. This article attempts to fill this gap using the material of the Avar language. Four types of semantic modification can be distinguished: expansion, narrowing, preservation, and complete loss of original meaning and acquisition of a new one. The article emphasizes the significant role of the Arabic language in the development of writing and literature in Daghestanian languages. The role of borrowings from the Arabic language in enriching the lexical composition of the Avar language and in spreading Arabic book writing in Dagestan is noted.
