The relevance of linguistic and cultural analysis of various lexical layers of a dialect under threat of extinction is undeniable. The onomastic lexicon of the dialect is of particular interest, as it preserves the most ancient forms of the language; furthermore, it contains valuable information about the plant and animal world, geography, ethnography, and history, and about the occupational activities of the dialect speakers. Therefore, onomastic lexicon attracts interest not only from linguist-dialectologists but also from geographers, historians, and ethnographers. This article, for the first time in Avar studies, attempts to fill a gap in the research of Shangodi microtoponymy, which determines its scientific novelty. The main research methods are descriptive and structural. Elements of componential analysis and the introspective method were also applied. The results of the research conducted in the article will be useful for developing the comparative lexicology of the Avar-Andic languages; this constitutes the theoretical significance of the article. The practical significance of the research conducted in the article lies in the possibility of using the material and results of this research for comparison with microtoponyms of other dialects of the Andalal dialect to identify the specifics of the toponymic system in different sub-dialects.
