DAGHESTAN IN 1733-1735 ACCORDING TO I. Ya. LERCHE

MAGARAMOV Sharafutdin A.

This article examines the diary entries of the traveler and military surgeon I.Ya. Lerche pertaining to Daghestan in the first half of the XVIII century. During two official journeys to the Caucasian-Caspian region, Lerche visited Daghestan, the Fortress of the Holy Cross, Kizlyar, Derbent, Shemakha, and other key locations. His meticulously kept diaries and travel notes not only document his observations but also synthesize the findings of his historical and geographical research. A distinctive feature of his records is the systematic comparison of his own data with the works of earlier scholars, which elevates his accounts to the level of substantive scholarly works for their era. The study aims to analyze the information on Daghestan and its inhabitants contained in Lerche’s diaries from his first journey (1733-1735). Lerche’s legacy has been underutilized in historiography due to issues of accessibility: a significant portion of his manuscripts remained untranslated into Russian for an extended period. The fragments published in the late XVIII century in New Monthly Writings are held in the collection of rare and valuable editions at the Russian State Library, where they were consulted for this research.
