DIFFERENT ALTITUDE CONDITIONS AS A FACTOR OF VARIABILITY IN THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE ADAPTIVE STRATEGY OF NIGELLA SATIVA L. DURING INTRODUCTION IN DAGHESTAN


This study presents the first comparative assessment of an Ethiopian accession of Nigella sativa L. (Ranunculaceae) introduced across an altitudinal gradient (50, 1100, and 1780 m above sea level) in the Mountain Botanical Garden of Daghestan. We analyzed the variability structure of key seed weight traits, which are primary indicators of the plant's adaptive reproductive strategy. Using the coefficient of variation and variance amplitude, the traits were categorized into groups of low and high variability. The most favorable conditions for growth and biomass accumulation were identified at the mid-altitude site (1100 m a.s.l., Tsudakhar Experimental Base), where plants achieved maximum mass and the highest mean values for most traits. A consistent negative correlation was found between elevation and the relative variability of weight traits, with three notable exceptions. Statistical significance of differences in mean trait values across sites was confirmed using Student's t-test.
