The article is devoted to the linguistic expedition of the Russian academician B.A. Dorn (1805-1881) to the Caucasus in 1860-1861, during which he used to visit Derbent, Kubachi, Kayakent and Kaytag. The participants aimed to collect materials on the artistic and linguistic culture of Daghestan and to find the grave of the scientist-naturalist G. Gmelin, who died in Daghestan in 1774. The sketches of the architectural appearance of the Kubachi village, other attractions (views of the tower, carved stones, etc.), “mostly made” by K.G. Gippius are the merit of the Dorn’s expedition. Karl Gippius (1832-1880) was an architect by profession. Since 1857 he had been working as an architect and artist at the Transcaspian Trade Association.
