This article discusses the main features of the photo as a source of visual information on the life-style of the population of Daghestan. It proves the importance of photographic documents that accurately reproduce the details of fixed objects and events that cannot be caught by the human eye. It is stated that it is necessary to create a methodology of source study of ethnographers with photo materials in order to more fully utilize their information potential and achieve a position in which they can perform on a par with the field records of the researchers. In the context of the widespread development and use of information systems, photographs are becoming a common form of popularization of the content of archival documents.
