The authors give a brief description of the activities of the Department of ancient and medieval history of the Institute of History, Archaeology and Ethnography of DFRC RAS, the main directions of research activities, assessments of the contribution of Daghestan scientists in the domestic Caucasus study. Noted are their undeniable success in the comprehensive study of the history of ancient and medieval Daghestan, in creation of the fundamental monographic researches and summarising works, and in training historians of higher qualification. The article presents the main indicators of scientific and creative activity of the Department's workers in the recent years, as well as the directions of research activities for the nearest future.
