The article is devoted to introduction into scientific circulation of information about the Avar Nutsaldom contained in the work “Allgemeine historisch-topographische Beschreibung des Kaukasus” by Jacob Reineggs, a physician, diplomat, and, generally, a man of diverse interests. This material has not been published in Russian and has not been used by Caucasusologists since the publication of the work in the late XVIII century. The article is preceded by a brief biography of the author who was a multifaceted personality with an adventurous nature. In 1778 he entered the service of the king of Kartli-Kakheti kingdom Irakli II (1720-1798), and in 1781 he entered the Russian service and would carry out the assignments of Count Grigoriy Potemkin (1739-1791), who actually led the empire's policy in the south-western direction, and in 1784-1791 would be the president of the Military Collegium (later transformed into the Military Ministry). Being in such an important diplomatic position and preparing the signing of the Treaty of Georgievo of 1783 (which stipulated the transfer of the Kartli-Kakheti kingdom under the protectorate of Russia), Reinges had extensive information about Georgia itself and all its neighbors, since the collection of this data was part of his direct official duties. This circumstance contributed to the fact that the material presented here is a unique and valuable source on the history of the Avar Nutsaldom of the late XVIII century. The article contains a translation of extracts from this work from German into Russian by Nurmagomed Gazaliyev.
