Abdurahman-haji al-Sughuri (1793-1882), a scholar-theologian and Naqshbandiya sheikh, is an author of an Arabic-language treatise dedicated to the necessity of moving the Caucasian Muslims to the territory of the Imamate where a Muslim ruler (Imam) governs in accordance with the Sharia law. It is stored in a single copy in the Princeton University Library, USA. This paper introduces a brief overview of this work, written in the genre of “risalah” (treatise), with a focus on the legal reasoning of the aforementioned sheikh and theologian. The author unequivocally asserts the imperative of hijra from Muslim territories occupied by infidels, contending that even if hijra was not obligatory, its desirability becomes imperative under the directive of the imam. Furthermore, al-Sughuri rebuts arguments suggesting that under the rule of the Russian Empire, Muslims can openly practice Islam, and refutes the notion that remaining within the confines of the Caucasian Imamate is advantageous for Muslims. The paper also attempts to date the work, tentatively placing it within the 40s-50-s of the XIX century.
