THE ANDIAN TUKHUMS (CLANS): HISTORICAL AND ETHNOGRAPHIC ESSAY

AMIRKHANOV Khizri Amirkhanovich

The materials concerning the origin, formation and composition of the tukhums in various regions of Daghestan are an important basis for local historical reconstructions. Systematized data of this kind are especially valuable in the context of the scarcity of the written historical sources. This work is devoted to the study of this problem in relation to the ethnographic group of the Andians. The work provides a generalized examination of the entire composition of Andian tukhums with an emphasis on a detailed description of those that are associated with the village of Andi, one of the largest and historically significant villages in Western Daghestan. A typological definition of the tukhum , including an Andian one, as a clan community is given, and the relationship between a tukhum and the rural territorial community is considered. The available written data on the issue under consideration are supplemented by an examination of the historical topography of the village and its cemeteries, an analysis of the settlement of the tukhums in the territory occupied by the village.
